Hi! I am Ensio Ensibartailainen and I have now grown a beard for the first time. I heard from a friend that beard oil can be harsh, but was there anything else I might need?
From Morje First. Your name fits beard growth so well that I'm now giving you the ultimate guide to buying your first beard products.
Every product in our selection is useful, but you don't necessarily need everything, so let's go through the most essential ones first, after which we can take a brief look at what else could be useful for your beard.
Three must-haves, even for a short beard (and how to use them)
Beard oil
Your friend was right. Beard oil is tough. It is generally the most important product in shaving care because its benefits are so versatile and effective.
It is important to start using beard oil even with a short beard, because it keeps the beard strong and nourished, so that it does not get brittle when it grows longer.
In addition, beard oil reduces itching caused by the beard, treats dry and scaly skin under the beard, softens the beard (spouse thanks) and gives it a healthy shine.
Use: Every day after showering, on a towel-dried or blow-dried beard. Just a small pond in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and rub into your beard. Make sure with your fingertips that the oil also gets on the skin under the beard.
Beard brush
Another must-have accessory for growing a healthy beard. The beard brush spreads the beard oil evenly around the beard and exfoliates the dead skin, so the oil is better absorbed and your skin stays healthy.
At the same time, the natural hair of the brush stimulates the hair follicle, which promotes healthy (and even faster) beard growth.
Use: Always brush your beard after oiling. Go through the entire beard carefully.
Beard shampoo
You have to wash that beard with something, and Ensio, I forbid you to wash it with hair shampoo or shower gel. They dry the beard incredibly badly and at the same time fight against beard oil.
Beard shampoo, on the other hand, is designed to clean your beard without removing important oils from it.
Use: Start by washing your beard with beard shampoo every three days. If you do some dirty work, or sweat in the gym every day, you should wash your beard a little more often. You will notice if every third day is not enough. For some, less often is enough. And otherwise, only water up to that point in the shower.
Bonus tip: Take the test too Shave Club shaving cream ! The conditioner used every time after washing guarantees a soft and shiny beard.
Other useful beard care products and when you need them
Beard comb
The beard comb is mainly a styling accessory, and it also removes the tangles from the beard well. Often necessary when your beard starts to grow +3cm (depending a bit on how curly it is).
If your beard growth is just beginning, you don't really need a beard comb at this stage. The beard grows about 1.25 cm per month, so measure and calculate from that, because you will most likely start needing a comb for your beard.
Beard wax / beard balm
This is also for slightly longer beards (starting again somewhere 2-3cm upwards, depending on the beard).
Some beard balms are really oily and intended mainly for beard care, in which case you can start using them already on a really short beard, but most of the time the balm or wax is more of a styling product, with a little extra care.
In other words, the purpose of the product is to get the rampant beard hairs back into shape, so that even a longer, untrimmed beard can often be made to look neat.
Use: Scrape the stuff out of the jar with your fingernail and warm it carefully in your hands. Massage evenly into the beard after oiling and brushing. Finish the design with a comb.
Mustache wax
A thick mustache with a beard often looks really good, but it can be a bit distracting when eating and drinking. When you notice that the mustache is to the extent that it interferes with eating (or drinking beer), then buy mustache wax.
Mustache wax differs from beard wax by being much harder and more durable. Mustaches tend to be stubborn and usually too hard for shaving wax to bite.
However, there are still different concentrations of mustache waxes, depending on whether it is enough for you to just move it away from the front of the mouth, or if you want to roll the ends of the mustache upwards.
Bonus tip: The best mustache wax for curling
Use: Scrape the mustache wax with your fingernail and heat it properly with your fingertips. Add a little at a time to the mustache. Harder mustache waxes in particular don't really want to spread terribly well, so with small amounts you can massage the mustache wax evenly into your mustache.
Beard conditioner
The biggest practical benefit of the conditioner is that it really softens the beard to silky smoothness. It also maintains the health of the beard, but most of the time the oil is enough for this.
So if the softening provided by the beard oil is not enough for your rough beard, use a conditioner.
Use: Massage into the beard in the shower after rinsing off the beard shampoo. Get a little out of the shower with your head and dry the biggest water off the beard before applying the conditioner; then you will get the most effective benefit out of it. Leave on for 1-2 minutes and rinse off.
Beard scissors
You can go to a professional barber to trim your beard every couple of weeks, but if there isn't such a rarity in your area that specializes in beards, you can learn to do it yourself with razor scissors.
Beard scissors cut the beard hair cleanly in one place. This way you won't get two-pronged at a later stage. We're not always responsible for everything modern, but an electric shaver breaks a beard hair and if you're going to grow it longer, you'll end up with split ends and you'll look silly. Cold hard fact.
Use: The key to learning this skill is to take your time and start with ridiculously small cuts. Then nothing can really go wrong. Gradually, slowly and precisely. You'll learn faster later.
