To whom?
For everyone who wants good grip with a natural matte finish. Reuzel recommends this for slightly shorter hair (3cm - 8cm), but in our tests it works quite well for slightly longer hair as well. Gets even coarse and curly hair under control and also works as a base product if your hair always feels limp. Just apply e.g. Reuzel's green or styling water if you want shine.
Packaging
Reuzel printed, metal jar with screw top. As an exception to Reuzel's previous pomades, these newer Fiber and Clay Matte come in a glossy jar. This is not bad at all. The metal is a bit thinner, so the jar may show small traces of use if you throw it in the cupboard.
Composition
Very creamy. It comes out of the jar easily and spreads effortlessly between the hands. The color is white.
Scent
A mixture of sweet and menthol or mint. Caramel-like.
Dissemination
Spreads easily on the hair, but dries a little faster than e.g. Reuzelin Fiber. So try to spread the product on your hair quickly. The hair obeys well and you notice a good hold already at this stage.
Result
Completely matte. If you have applied the pomade evenly and styled your hair a little more casually, you can easily get a result that no one will notice that you have any styling product on your head. That is, such nice straight outta bed-style hair can be done perfectly. Of course, this also makes the coolest classic hairstyles, without shine.
At the end of the day
Although Reuzel Clay Matte is a water-based pomade, it does not harden completely. Hold is enough for the whole day and reshaping is also possible even if you had to wear the hat for a couple of hours. Resists sweating well: Designed for active men, says Reuzel.
Washing
A little more challenging than the usual water-based one, but still easy to wash off. That is, you don't start with just water, but then a light buildup remains in the hair. You can completely remove the product from your hair with a normal, daily shampoo.
Manufacturing
The company behind Reuzel is Dutch and the famous Schorem barber is in Rotterdam, but all their products are made in the USA.
Shave Club Verdict
If there's one thing we've learned from Reuzel's pomades, it's that they are all reliably functional, very conventional pomades, all of which have a little plus on top. Clay Matte's absolute plus, in addition to the expected good features, is the ease of washing while still being able to withstand sweating, e.g. during sports performance. A good clay that you will hardly be disappointed with.
