Packaging
Reuzel's printed, matte metal jar with screw cap. Feels good in the hand. The metal is a bit thinner, so the jar may show small traces of use if you throw it around too roughly. So don't :D
Composition
Pink Reuzel is a rather waxy pomade. Pretty typical heavy hold in that sense. Scooping the product out of the jar is very easy, but you should rub it between your hands for a little while so that it spreads evenly. The color is naturally light.
Scent
Reuzel describes the scent as "like an angel pissing on your nose". Sweet and, like Reuzel, quite a strong scent. Hubbabubba gum comes to mind. There's a real 50s spirit here, in a good way. Maybe even a hint of said angel's piss.
Distribution
The pomade definitely spreads better and easier on the hair than the usual heavy hold, but yes, this is still in the heavy hold category in terms of spreading. So by no means a nightmare, but you have to carefully make sure that the product goes evenly everywhere.
Then, when the pomade is spread evenly on the head, the shapeability is first-class. The comb also goes through the hair easily. Considering the grip that the pink Reuzel offers, this is a really positive surprise.
Result
The high wax content means that the shine remains in the medium category. However, you can easily get more shine by throwing a little Reuzel styling water as a topper. Even if you have created a more demanding hairstyle with good volume, you will immediately notice that it will stay. The hair is fixed as one sets it.
At the end of the day
As in a proper heavy hold, the reformatability remains throughout the day, even until the next morning. The grip seem to stay as when set. Medium gloss, on the other hand, gets a little lighter over time.
Washing
Definitely requires a deep cleansing shampoo if you want to get it all off. However, you should get used to the buildup that remains after normal washing. You don't need so much pomade the next day, when the old one is already in the hair. Thus remember to do regular deep cleansing washing to maintain a happy scalp.
Manufacturing
The company behind Reuzel is Dutch and the famous Schorem barber is in Rotterdam, but all their products are made in the USA.
Shave Club Verdict
In many ways, a conventional oil-based heavy hold.. however, with so many positive surprises that it will definitely rank among the best heavy pomades. No wonder this has been a favorite of many for the past couple of years. Deserves its praise.
